RasGas wins US construction industry safety award
RasGas Company Limited's (RasGas') robust commitment to workplace health and safety has been recognised with a Construction Industry Safety Excellence (CISE) award from the Construction Users Roundtable (CURT).
CURT is an association of leading United States and Canadian corporations and government organisations that is committed to promoting construction industry safety around the world. CURT established the CISE safety awards programme to recognise those organisations that have most effectively implemented the recommendations of the CURT Owners' Safety Blueprint. This year's CISE awards were announced at CURT's National Construction Owners Conference, held in Florida, USA, in November.
RasGas Common Offplot Projects (COP) won the CISE award for demonstrating commendable safety management and safety. The award recognised the projects' excellent workplace safety record from 2006 to 2008, despite a fourfold increase in the total man-hours worked on the site (from approximately 5.5 million to 22.4 million) during the same period.
RasGas Common Offplot Projects are a $2 billion expansion of gas storage and loading facilities at Ras Laffan Industrial City (RLC) in Qatar. Started in 2005 and completed in April this year, COP faced a number of daunting challenges, including cultural and communication issues (with 31 different nationalities represented in the construction workforce), and extreme heat conditions.
The COP team's 'Safety Leadership by Design' approach was central to its success in addressing these significant challenges, along with hazard management (through job safety analysis and personal risk assessments), observation and intervention (through behaviour-based feedback), near-miss and hazard reporting, and a proactive programme to address findings from leading indicators (such as safety walkthroughs) without delay. Apart from connecting with the workforce, the walkthroughs served to reduce workplace risks and demonstrated leadership commitment to safety.
"The Common Offplot Projects have set new benchmarks for project execution excellence, particularly in the area of safety performance, "said Dave Marchak, RasGas Venture Group Manager. "RasGas has developed a safety management model that focuses on creating the right workplace 'climate' for superior safety performance, by recognising good behaviour, learning and improving. The CISE award demonstrates that RasGas' programmes and procedures have met the exacting requirements of the US construction industry's Safety Blueprint document."
Greg Landis, Co-Chairman of the CURT Safety Committee, added: "The CISE award winners have once again established new levels of safety performance, achievement and innovation that prove zero incidents can be achieved, "said. "CURT is proud to present world-class performance and teamwork, resulting in the highest commitment to safety as defined by the Construction Owners' Safety Blueprint." |
