RasGas encourages local schoolchildren to reduce, reuse and recycle!

AL KHOR, QATAR - 16TH DECEMBER 2009

Members of RasGas Company Limited's (RasGas') Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Group continued their series of environmental presentations to school in the RasGas and Qatargas housing community in Al Khor.  The presentation given in December to Al Khor International Schools raised awareness of the importance of recycling and encouraged schoolchildren to become actively involved in protecting the environment.  Approximately 160 students from years 7 and 8 attended the presentation.

"Under the theme 'together we can make a difference' we encouraged children to become actively involved in the RasGas Housing Recycling Project, which was launched in June 2009 to increase the recycling rates of waste paper, plastic and cans in  RasGas Housing Compounds in Doha. By starting small and recycling, children can affect the future of the planet." said Rafiu Ibikunle, RasGas Waste Recycling Supervisor, who delivered the presentation

The presentation outlined the three Rs - reduce, reuse, recycle to cut down the amount of waste produced, and the importance of recycling for the sustainable development of Qatar, in line with the 2030 National Vision.

At the end of the presentation, RasGas announced the start of a competition to encourage the children to produce a poster, slogan or device (such as a can crusher) to promote recycling in the community. The last day of the competition will be 16 January 2010, the 12 strongest entries from each school will be sent to RasGas for final judging after that the company will present the winners with special prizes.

This initiative falls under the RasGas' Corporate Social Responsibility programme, which aims to make a sustainable and positive impact on Qatari society in the four spheres of community, education, environment and health.
