British Safety Council awards for RasGas employees
RasGas Company Limited (RasGas) today honoured a group of employees who have successfully completed levels 3 and 4 of the British Safety Council (BSC) safety training programme.
At an official ceremony in Ras Laffan, the RasGas employees, including four Qatari Nationals, were presented with their certificates by Hamad Rashid Al Mohannadi, RasGas Managing Director - CEO, and Nina Wrightson, BSC Chairman - CEO.
Five RasGas safety officers passed level 3 City and Guilds National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Occupational Health and Safety through BSC, including one National graduate under development. Among the seven safety officers who achieved NVQ level 4 were three Qatari Nationals. In 2007 eight RasGas employees became the first to successfully complete the BSC, NVQ programme.
'Safety is one of RasGas core values and I would like to offer my congratulations to the employees on their training success. The British Safety Council is one of the world's leading occupational health, safety and environmental organisations, and RasGas has been working in partnership with the organisation for a number of years, "said Mr Mohannadi. "RasGas is also committed to developing competent Qatari Nationals at all levels of the company, as part of its support for the Qatar National Vision 2030.
RasGas has developed a robust safety culture, putting in place comprehensive safety management systems. As part of the BSC's NVQ programme, RasGas safety officers gain a nationally recognised, transferable qualification. The programme is competence-based: NVQ-3 is designed for those who have a 'hands-on' role involving health and safety; NVQ-4 is aimed at those with the authority to develop and implement a safety management system, and who have undertaken detailed assessments.
RasGas Safety department inaugurated the BSC NVQ-3 in Health & Safety in 2005. The NVQ programme offers a flexible approach to achieving a recognised City & Guilds qualification. Supported by an experienced and qualified health and safety practitioner, the candidate builds a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate competence across the NVQ areas. This portfolio is then verified externally. Each NVQ level normally take two years for the candidate to complete. On successful completion of NVQ level 3, candidates move on to level 4. All successful candidates who complete this programme can apply to become members of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).
Founded in 1957, the British Safety Council is one of the world's leading health and safety organisations. Its mission is to keep people healthy and safe at work, and it operates in over 50 countries worldwide. Nina Wrightson is the BSC Chairman. Previously she served as President of IOSH and Chair of the Royal Society for Prevention of Accidents (ROSPA)'s National Health and Safety Committee. She has also served on a number of UK Government working parties, and advised the Ministry of Manpower, Singapore, on the development of competency standards for health and safety practitioners. She was awarded the OBE in 2005 for services to health and safety. |
